Iran has nominated an ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after an eight-year absence, as relations between the two Arab countries strengthen.

Prior to his promotion, Reza Ameri was the director general of the Iranian expatriates office at the Foreign Ministry, according to Xinhua news agency, citing local media.

Ameri was previously Iran’s Ambassador to Algeria, Sudan, and Eritrea.

When Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic ties with Tehran in January of that year after Iranian protestors stormed the kingdom’s embassy in Tehran in response to Riyadh’s killing of a prominent Shia cleric, the UAE downgraded its relations with Iran in 2016.

The UAE will re-establish its ambassador to Iran in September 2022.
