Australian detained for smuggling $3.7 million in narcotics

An Australian man was detained at Hobart Airport in Tasmania state on Tuesday after he was discovered to be carrying A$5.5 million ($3.7 million) in cocaine and methylamphetamine, according to an official statement.

The 32-year-old was apprehended on Monday night by Tasmanian Police and the Australian Federal Police (AFP), according to the Xinhua news agency.

According to the statement, the individual was found to be in possession of a prohibited narcotic while police officials were performing drug screening on arriving passengers.

Police recovered 2 kg of cocaine and 3.5 kg of methylamphetamine after checking the man’s things.

The guy, who had just arrived in Hobart on a flight from Sydney, was transported to the Hobart Police Station and charged with trafficking prohibited substances.

The man was arrested and will appear in court on Tuesday.
