Two police officers were killed during a traffic check in Cameron, Wisconsin, in the northern United States.

The incident happened about 3:38 p.m. on Saturday, according to Xinhua, citing a statement from the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

At the scene, two cops were declared dead. The suspect, a driver, was transported to the hospital and eventually died.

Details concerning the event are still being probed, according to local media on Sunday.

According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, an organisation that chronicles police officer fatalities in the line of duty across the United States, this is the second and third officer death in the line of duty in Wisconsin this year. The first occurred two months ago in Milwaukee, when a police officer was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend a suspect.
